Editors' Discussion Panel "Working Collaboratively"
The Editors' Lounge Discussion Panel convened once again engage in great discussion about the craft and business of editing. Norman Hollyn lead the panelists on a wide-ranging discussion about working collaboratively in the editing environment—not "cloud editing" but real face-to-face teamwork on projects with high-pressure deadlines. Avid Night is Back!
What's New in Avid Media Composer and Pro Tools, Plus a Demonstration of MediaCentral | Editorial Management
Avid returned to the Editors' Lounge in July for demonstrations of all the important new features coming to Media Composer. If you missed NAB 2018 or have unanswered questions about what's in store for your favorite editing platform, this is an evening you won't want to miss.
Demonstrations of new features in Media Composer included the ability to edit 16K projects for digital signage, performing insert edits to a previously exported sequence, a live timeline allowing editors to continue working in other parts of Media Composer while the media or sequence is still playing out, enhancements to multicam, shape-based color correction functionality, and more.
The evening also highlighted some of the newest innovations in Pro Tools with Avid’s EUCON-enabled control surfaces and interfaces, as well as showcasing the Avid Pro Tools | S3 and Pro Tools | Dock.
Guests got an early look at Avid’s new MediaCentral | Editorial Management solution for team collaboration. Using a completely integrated media panel, Media Composer editors can quickly search and access bins and clips outside of their active project. In addition, Editorial Management enables anyone on the team, from PA’s to producers, to browse and search media via a streamlined web interface; MediaCentral | Cloud UX. The MediaCentral | Cloud UX web UI even allows for the creation of bins and modification of projects, outside of Avid Media Composer.
As an added bonus, senior Avid project managers were also on hand to speak with attendees and answer their questions.

New Toolsets Powered by AI and Adobe Sensei ML for Adobe Creative Cloud
The Editors’ Lounge hosted Adobe on Friday, June 22nd for a night dedicated to updates and what’s new in Adobe® Creative Cloud® video and audio tools such as Premiere® Pro CC and After Effects® CC. The event focused on features powered by Adobe Sensei, Adobe’s artificial intelligence and machine learning platform.
Experts from the Adobe team were on hand to give demonstrations of the latest updates to Adobe Premiere Pro such as dynamic color improvements. Getting the look you want is now easier than ever with one-click color grade matching and side-by-side shot comparisons with Adobe Sensei. Upgrades to the essential graphics panels, including improved graphics workflow in Premiere Pro and new master properties in After Effects make it possible to create just about anything. From movie titles to animated logos, starting a fire or making it rain, with After Effects CC, it’s just a simple click away to take any idea and make it move.
Also demonstrated was the new Shared Projects feature in Adobe Premiere Pro that enables a streamlined editing workflow. Editing teams in the same facility can work collaboratively on a project simultaneously, enabling a smoother, faster workflow, without fear of work being overwritten
Mixing audio is now easier than ever with new features that include Auto-Ducking in Premiere Pro, automates volume levels for music when other audio is detected. Powered by Adobe Sensei technology, Auto-Ducking does in less than a second what used to take minutes or hours. Editors no longer have the painstakingly long task of adding keyframes one-by-one to the music clip or track volume envelopes.

May Event - Tektronix, RE:Vision Effects and NETSTAIRS
The Editors' Lounge May Event came early this year, in order to share a variety of great post production solutions.
Steven Holmes (Sr. Video Application Engineer at Tektronix) presented the benefits of using external waveform monitors in getting optical picture quality when color correcting. Attendees learned how to properly look at 4K and HD waveforms, correct settings for HDR and important differences between Dolby Vision, HDR 10 and HDR 10+, and much much more.
Lori Freitag (Training and Content Manager) and Anthony Magliocco (VP of Business Development) were on hand to demonstrate how editors can take advantage of Adobe Dynamic Link to use popular RE:Revision plugins like Twixtor®, RE:Match® and RE:Lens® from within After Effects to enhance their Adobe Premiere Pro projects—no expertise in After Effects required!
David Vernon (Vernon’s Vision, Global Agent Representative for NETSTAIRS) presented WebRTC (Real Time Communication) with the NETSTAIRS/Pixel.Click-To-Video/Wall of OZ and OZWall.video solutions. NETSTAIRS technologies addresses the problems of production and post-production companies being able to share globally “in real time,” with no latency or delay, anytime of day and anywhere in the world where an internet signal is available. Dr. Ahmad Moradi, Chairman and CEO of NETSTAIRS also presented full demonstrations via a Digital Media Room showing firsthand the application and efficiency of DMR technology.

New Presentations for the New Year
Solutions for Editing Plugins, Storage and Media Management
The Editors' Lounge hopes that everyone had a fun holiday season, and that you are all recharged and ready for 2018. We certainly are! To kick off the first Lounge of the year, some familiar faces are back to show off their latest offerings: Glookast with updates to their cloud-based media-management products, Boris FX with their latest and greatest visual effects plugins, and G-Technology with storage solutions to fit any need.
GLOOKAST Solution Architect Dave Euson will demonstrate of Glooport Media|Producer, an easy-to-use high-speed file-based ingesting platform that takes raw file-based media for direct ingests into broadcast and production workflows. Also showcased will be the Gloobox Capturer, a baseband capture solution and Glooport, a family of cluster-based load-balanced services that offer seamless integration into existing workflows by automating and managing remote ingest, parking, retrieving, transforming and outgest of media and metadata across all platforms.
Boris FX Product Specialist Mary Poplin will show the latest Boris Continuum and Sapphire tools for Avid, and Premiere Pro editors, including the new Continuum Primatte chroma-keyer and Mocha integration inside of popular Sapphire tools. The ability of Sapphire Builder and Lens Flare Designer to easily enhance creative storytelling will also be featured.
G-Technology Solution Architect Jesse Adams and Account Manager Chris Bradley, will present the G-Rack 12 NAS-based solution and the DAS-based G-SPEED Shuttle XL appliance, a transportable 8-bay hardware-RAID solution with Thunderbolt™ 3 technology supporting 4K workflows with transfer rates up to 2000MB/s and multiple RAID configurations. They will also offer a first look at the new multi-bay RAID Array that will be officially announced on January 16th

Warming Up 2017 With New Solutions for Post

The Editors’ Lounge kicked off 2017 with clouds. Not ominous stormclouds (we've had enough of those!) but clouds of data for remote editing, collaboration and workflow management. A great crowd joined us for an evening on production and post... in the cloud.
Herb Dow, Head of Global Sales for BeBop Technology, will join us to take everyone through the features of their online streaming platform for taking editorial workflows online to a completely cloud-based environment. He will share real-world examples of BeBop’s cloud services in action.
Jesse Adams, Sr. Sales Engineer for EditShare, will demonstrate Flow, a production asset management platform for creative control of all files during the production and post-production process including automation and remote access. A case study will show Flow in action as used remotely to integrate on-set hardware with cloud-based tools.
Kellie Mattzela-Atton, Head of Sales for Simian, along with Simian Co-Founder and CEO Brian Atton, will showcase how their production asset management platform delivers highly streamlined project collaboration, including media sharing and 360°/VR video workflows.

File-based Powerhouse Solutions for QC, Insert Editing, Workflow Automation, and More
The Editors' Lounge returned from a Summer Hiatus on Friday, September 30 with an event focusing on file-based workflows, ranging from workflow automation to QC to insert editing directly into the mastered file.
• Charles Dautremont, CTO of Cinedeck, presented the latest features of cineXinsert, a cross-codec cross-wrapper file-based insert editor.
• Niklas Fabian and Jorge Zepeda of Rohde & Schwarz demonstrated the VENICE ingest & production server and CLIPSTER 6 mastering & distribution workstation.
• Anand Jahagirdar, Head of Sales & Support North America for ROOT6 Technology, demoed ContentAgent, a file-based management and orchestration tool for workflow automation.

Following closely on the heels of April's event, this month's Editors' Lounge brought more updates and new tools from NAB 2016. Multiple presentations focused on greater creativity, improved performance, and tighter workflow integration.
Product Specialist Mary Poplin demonstrated the new co-devolpment from Imagineer Systems and Boris FX featuring deep integration of mocha's planar tracking throughout Boris Continuum Complete 10. Guests learned how mocha tracking and masking tools can combine with the latest new BCC features like Beauty Studio and Title Studio for greater creativity and streamlined workflows.
Adobe Senior Product Manager Al Mooney and Product Manager (Motion Graphics) Victoria Nece, presented the latest developments in Adobe Creative Cloud for powerful new tools, improved performance and integrated workflows using Adobe Premiere and After Effects, and much more.

Blackmagic Design demonstrated some of the latest features of Resolve 12.5, including deep ingration with Fusion. GLOOKAST demonstrated their tools for capturing, sharing, managing, converting and distributing 4K digital content across multiple platforms, from multiple sources at multiple resolutions. RE:Vision Effects presented RE:Lens™—their newest plug-in for 360 viewers, capable of creating panoramic videos from a single camera with a fisheye or super fisheye lens allowing the creation of 360-like videos without needing stitching. The end of March means NAB is just around the corner, and NAB means it's time again for Editors' Lounge to present its Annual Pre-NAB Discussion Panel. Key Code Media in Burbank helped us host our 13th Edition (!!!) of this annual favorite, which took place on Friday March 25.
Our good friend, writer Debra Kaufman, retuned to moderate a panel that included AlphaDogs CEO Terence Curren, editor Monica Daniel, Key Code Media Director of Technology Michael Kammes, and Bunim/Murray Productions VP of Post Mark Raudonis.

There was a lot to learn, and the record turnout proved that this really is a topic that people are really interested in.

Editors' Lounge was proud to present our first VR-themed event on Friday, February 26. Four presenters generously donated their time to cover this topic from all angles:

The Future Is Here: Working With HDR
The What, Why and How of High Dynamic Range in Post Production
The Editors’ Lounge kicked off its 2016 season on Friday, January 29th with a special focus on HDR in post-production. High Dynamic Range video is coming and editors need to be prepared for integrating it into their workflows. Leading post-production hardware and software companies presented solutions for successfully working with HDR media in the editing suite.
Dolby Laboratories' Jim Crenshaw gave a presentation on HDR content creation for Dolby Vision and HDR-10. Topics included HDR in acquisition, VFX, editing, grading/mastering, encoding and playback, and creating Dolby Vision, HDR-10 and Rec 709 deliverables from a single workflow.
David McGavran, Director of Engineering for Adobe’s professional audio and video products, dropped by to demonstrate the latest release of Adobe Premiere Pro CC and its support for High Dynamic Range video featuring the new Lumetri Color Panel.
In addition, FilmLight showcased its HDR, wide gamut and Ultra HD 4K color technology. Peter Postma, U.S. Product Manager for FilmLight, was on hand to show attendees how content can look its best in any context across production, editorial, VFX and finishing with Baselight Editions for Avid and NUKE and the Baselight color finishing system for Dolby Vision mastering.
The evening was a phenomenal success with a record attendance. Based on how jam-packed every single presentation was throughout the evening, there is a lot of interest in—and questions about—HDR and what it means for editors.

Once October rolled around, it was time again for our annual discussion panel of editors talking about the non-technical side of editing! This year's discussion was centered on strategies for tackling new projects once you've been hired for the job.
Our panel of award winning editors included Zack Arnold (Burn Notice), Yvette Amirian (Whale Wars), Dan Lebental (Iron Man) and Scott Storm (The Amazing Race). Editor Norman Hollyn (Heathers, Wild Palms) moderated the discussion.

Visual Voodoo with Blackmagic Design
Demonstrations on the Latest Features in DaVinci Resolve and Fusion Studio
The Editors' Lounge held on Friday, July 31 at AlphaDogs in Burbank was a night dedicated to the latest versions of Blackmagic Design's flagship studio software: DaVinci Resolve 12 and Fusion 7 Studio.
Blackmagic Design announced DaVinci Resolve 12 at NAB 2015, and Product Specialist Fred Beahm gave one of the first demonstrations of the new software and its new features. Fred is a member of the Motion Picture Editors Guild and Affiliate Member of American Cinema Editors, and has numerous editing credits to his name. DaVinci Resolve 12 features an updated UI and expanded color-correction tools, as well as new powerful editing, audio, and compositing features.
Blackmagic Design announced Fusion 7 Studio in late 2014, and recently announced the upcoming Mac and Linux version of the popular VFX software. Product Specialist Rony Soussan has over 25 years experience as a 3D digital artist and VFX compositor, and he is active on the Blackmagic Design Fusion user forum. Fusion Studio 7 features powerful toolsets for 2D and 3D VFX compositing, motion GFX design and animation, and 3D stereoscopic conversions.
In addition, Blackmagic displayed a number of their hardware products.

ACES for Editors and Colorists, plus The Monitor Shootout!
Presentations on ACES plus the Best Reference-Grade Monitors
The June Editors' Lounge held a night dedicated to educating the post production community about ACES, the Academy Color Encoding System, as well as the latest in state-of-the-art, reference-grade monitors.
ACES
How do you get the entire creative team from the set, through editorial, post and archiving to speak the same language when it comes to color management and file interchange? ACES is the answer!
Alex Forsythe, Academy Technical Lead, ACES Project, Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, opened with a presentation about what ACES is and how it works, with a focus on editorial and post. He was followed by Digital Intermediate Colorist Trent Johnson of Deluxe Culver City and Editor Shelly Westerman, who discussed ACES' real world application. The duo collaborated on The Wedding Ringer, a film that employed ACES throughout the creative process. Also present was Screen Gems Head of Physical Production, Glenn Gainor, and the group discussion was moderated by Documentary Producer Steve Tobenkin. The evening was filled with great questions and detailed answers; guests gained real insight into ACES and learned how ACES will impact their work.
Monitors
The Editors' Lounge Monitor Shootout presented multiple reference grade LCD and OLED monitors from Dolby, Flanders Scientific and Sony. These color-critical screens were lined up in a row under controlled lighting conditions while displaying the same HD content, so that attendees were able to move from monitor to monitor and evaluate them in a way that can't be done at individual trade show booths. Company representatives were on hand to explain features and answer questions.
In addition, Sony set up a BVM-X300 OLED monitor which played HDR 4K material at native resolution — the stunning images were a definite hit!

Editors' Lounge Spring Fling
RE:Vision FX, Venera Technologies and VFX for Editors
The Editors' Lounge May event presented an evening of demos and discussions focused on a variety of solutions for editors and small post facilities.
Lori Freitag, Training and Content Manager for RE:Vision Effects, demonstrated some of their most powerful and popular plugins for modifying and manipulating video imagery, including DE:Flicker, RE:Match, ReelSmart Motion Blur, and Twixtor. From fixing problem footage to creative enhancements, Lori showed how the RE:Vision toolset can meet any challenges.
Fereidoon Khosravi, SVP Business Development Americas for Venera Technologies, presented information about their file-based automated QC tool, Pulsar, including a new pay-per-use version offering a cost effective solution for smaller facilities and independents. Pulsar offers a wide variety of checks and automated toolsets that integrate anywhere along your workflow.
Editor Brady Betzel also stopped by to talk about 3D modeling/animation for reality television, with an emphasis on toolsets for editors like Avid F/X Tools, Adobe After Effects, and MAXON Cinema 4D.

2015 Pre-NAB Discussion Panel
12th Annual Panel on all Things NAB 2015… and Beyond
To prepare for NAB 2015, the Editors' Lounge once again put together a stellar panel to talk the usual talk about industry trends and NAB predictions. Except that—this year—the discussion veered away from tech and got really interesting by delving into more personal topics affecting all editors: health and safety, long hours and low pay, and the difficulty of advancement.
Our favorite journalist Debra Kaufman once again moderated, and the exceptionally well-rounded panel included editor / fitness advocate Zack Arnold, colorist Terence Curren, editor Carsten Kurpanek, producer Bernie Laramie, and post producer Mark Raudonis.
